Traveling with kids: Embracing the Chaos, Finding the Joy

Traveling with kids is an adventure — the kind that involves snacks, stress, and the inevitable forgotten item. (Still having PTSD from the time we forgot the diaper bag… THE DIAPER BAG.)

We just returned from a family trip and it seems like a good time to normalize the odd combination of stress and wonder that traveling with littles can bring.

Over the years, I’ve stopped chasing the fantasy of a “perfect trip.” Instead, I’ve learned to focus on what actually makes things run smoother and keeps everyone (mostly) sane. Here are some tips that help our family travel with littles feel less chaotic and a whole lot more joyful.

Tips for Smoother Travel With Littles

Look for a hotel with laundry

If you’re traveling more than a few days, laundry = lighter packing. And let’s be honest — do you ever wear everything you bring? Nope. Pack less. Stress less.

Try to book direct flights

The fewer airport transitions, the better.
If you can’t go direct, buffer your connections. Rushing across airports with a toddler should count as a CrossFit workout.

Consider staying near the airport the night before

Especially with early flights.
Hotels often offer “park and fly” deals, and the next morning feels way less frantic.

Try to snag the seat behind the bulkhead

There’s usually more floor space. If you have a pre-walker, laying a blanket down there for playtime can be magical.

Let the kids manage their own luggage

If they’re old enough, let them own their little rolling suitcase. It builds independence and they feel important. Win-win.

Gate check the stroller

You get it back as soon as you step off the plane. Perfect for strapping their little butts in and rolling through the airport chaos.

You don’t have to board early

Sometimes it’s better to keep them off the plane as long as possible. More space to wiggle.

Snacks. Snacks. More snacks.

No explanation needed.

Use every bathroom you pass

Kids’ bladders have terrible timing. Proceed accordingly.

Don’t stress too much about entertaining them

For littles, everything is entertainment.
For big kids: I’m 100% team screen time on travel days. Survival mode is real.

Final Thoughts: Joy in the Chaos

Traveling with kids is challenging — but it’s also given me some of my favorite memories. The deep breaths, the “we don’t usually eat this” snacks, the plan B… C… D… and the ridiculous flexibility it teaches all of us.

Here’s to the chaos, the laughter, and the joyful memories — one emergency bathroom run at a time. ✈️
